Everything else about flying in Cappadocia
The rules behind the decision, the month-by-month record, what a flight costs and what happens when a morning is called off.
- Roughly one morning in three is cancelled over a yearSeven per cent in August, seventy-one in January. The annual average hides almost everything useful.
- The decision is made per sector between 03:00 and 05:00By the civil aviation authority, not your operator, which is why a pickup can be called off after you are collected.
- Gusts ground more mornings than average wind doesA calm average with sharp gusts is a worse bet than a steady five kilometres an hour.
- Keep two spare mornings from May to October, four in winterAnd put the flight on the first good morning, not the best one: a spare after the flight is worthless.
Why a morning gets cancelled
A balloon has no steering. It goes where the air goes, and it lands wherever the pilot can find a field in the direction the wind is already taking it. That single fact explains every cancellation rule below: the margin for error is the weather itself, not the equipment.
Each morning the Directorate General of Civil Aviation reads the sounding and the surface observations for Kapadokya and issues a decision per sector. It is not the operator's call, and no operator can overrule it.
| Parameter | Roughly where it stops flight | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Surface wind | Above about 8–10 km/h | The envelope cannot be inflated or held steady on the ground |
| Wind at altitude | Above about 15–20 km/h | Drift outruns the recovery vehicles and the approved landing fields |
| Gusts | Sharp gusts even in light average wind | A gust during inflation or touchdown is the classic accident |
| Visibility | Fog, haze or precipitation | Separation between eighty balloons depends on the pilots seeing each other |
| Cloud base | A low ceiling over the valleys | There is no room to climb, and no view if there were |
| Precipitation | Any rain, sleet or snow | A wet envelope gains weight and loses its behaviour |
| Thermal activity | Unstable air after sunrise | This is why flights are at first light and never later |
Look at the gust column in the risk board above, not the average. A morning at 2 km/h average with 19 km/h gusts is a worse bet than a steady 5 km/h.
The month-by-month record
Cappadocia flies roughly 250 mornings a year, but they are not spread evenly. The pattern is stable enough to plan around: late summer and early autumn are the reliable window, midwinter is a gamble, and spring sits in between.
| Month | Cancelled | Flying days | Typical price | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 71% | ~9 | €108 | Only with four mornings in hand |
| February | 50% | ~14 | €83 | Cheapest month, coin-flip odds |
| March | 49% | ~16 | €113 | Keep three mornings free |
| April | 42% | ~17 | €152 | Improving, still windy |
| May | 26% | ~23 | €224 | Good odds, green valleys |
| June | 20% | ~24 | €214 | Reliable and not yet peak-priced |
| July | 23% | ~24 | €208 | Hot afternoons, calm mornings |
| August | 7% | ~29 | €264 | The most reliable month of the year |
| September | 14% | ~26 | €282 | Best balance of weather and light |
| October | 17% | ~26 | €288 | Autumn colour, book early |
| November | 50% | ~15 | €202 | The window closes fast |
| December | 55% | ~14 | €134 | Snow views if you are lucky |
Read the table as a booking instruction rather than a forecast. In August one morning is enough. In March, book the flight for your first morning in Cappadocia and treat every later morning as a spare — which in practice means three nights in the valley rather than two.
The three sectors and the flag system
Cappadocian airspace has been split into three sectors since 2013, with a ceiling of 154 balloons in the air at once. The decision is made per sector, which is why the panel at the top of this page shows three lines rather than one. A red sector does not always mean a cancelled morning: operators licensed in more than one sector can move a launch south when the north is closed.
What each sector gives you
- Sector A · Avanos and Aktepe (north). The Kızılırmak bend and the open plain, fewer balloons in frame, 25–35 minutes from a Göreme hotel. The quiet choice.
- Sector B · Göreme, Ortahisar and Ürgüp (central). Göreme National Park and the Love, Rose, Red and Sword valleys. Eighty to a hundred balloons at sunrise and the shortest transfer. This is the photograph everyone has seen.
- Sector C · Mustafapaşa, Kavak and İbrahimpaşa (south). Southern villages and Roman-era settlements, thinner traffic, and often flyable when a north wind closes A and B.
The flags
- Green. Commercial flights authorised in that sector.
- Yellow. Restricted: training flights with an instructor aboard only. For a passenger this is the same as red.
- Red. No commercial flight. The conditions do not meet the minimum.
It is set by your operator's licence and by the wind on the morning. If a specific valley matters to you, say so when you book and we will tell you honestly whether it can be promised.
What a flight costs, and why the range is so wide
Expect €100 to €600 per person for a scheduled flight, and four figures for a private basket. The spread is not arbitrary — it tracks the number of people standing in the basket with you and the month you fly in.
| Class | Passengers | Airtime | Per person | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Up to 32 people | 60 min | €150–€400 | First flight, best value |
| Deluxe | Up to 16 people | 60–75 min | €400–€600 | Photography, more room at the edge |
| Private | Up to 8 people | 75–90 min | From €4,000 per basket | Proposals, one-off occasions |
What moves the number, in order of weight: the month, the basket class, the airtime, and finally the extras — hotel transfer, breakfast, the flight certificate and the toast at the end. Ask which of those four are in the price before comparing two quotes.
One thing worth knowing: a hotel desk booking is usually 10–20% above the same seat bought directly, because the desk takes a margin. Our Cappadocia tours are priced against the operator rate.
If your morning is cancelled
Cancellation is the normal case, not the exception — over a year roughly one morning in three is called off. What matters is what happens next, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on who you booked with.
How the morning actually goes
- The night before, around 21:00. A first read on the next morning. Many operators call or message at this point if the outlook is clearly bad.
- Between 03:00 and 05:00. The official decision per sector. This is the one that counts, and it is why a pickup can be cancelled while you are already in the minibus.
- On the ground. Occasionally a launch is stopped after inflation if the wind turns. Nobody is charged for a flight that did not happen.
What we do
If we sold you the flight and it is cancelled for weather, we move it to the next morning you are in Cappadocia at no charge. If you are leaving and there is no next morning, the flight is refunded to the card you paid with. We do not hold the money as credit and we do not charge a rebooking fee for a decision that was never yours.
Where a balloon flight is one line inside a longer package, the rest of the itinerary runs as booked and only the flight is settled. The full position is in our terms and conditions.
Ask one question in writing: "if the flight is cancelled for weather, do I get a refund or a credit?" Any answer that is not a plain refund is a reason to book elsewhere.
The morning, hour by hour
The flight is an hour. The morning is four. Knowing the shape of it removes most of the anxiety about a 03:30 alarm.
- −90 minHotel pickup
A minibus collects you from your hotel door. Summer pickups run 03:30–04:30, spring and autumn 04:00–05:00, winter 05:00–05:30. Bring the room key; nobody is at reception.
- −70 minBreakfast at the launch field
Coffee, tea, pastries, and twenty minutes standing in the cold watching envelopes being laid out. This is where the morning is either called or confirmed.
- −35 minBriefing and inflation
The pilot explains the landing position — knees bent, hold the rope, no cameras in your hands on touchdown. Then the burners go in and the envelope stands up in about fifteen minutes.
- −5 minBoarding
You climb in over the side of the basket. There is a foothold; a reasonably fit adult manages it without help.
- 00:00Takeoff, first light
The lift is vertical and so gentle that most people miss the moment it happens. Within minutes there are eighty balloons around you.
- +20 minThe valleys
The pilot works the wind layers, dropping into Love or Rose valley close enough to touch the rock, then climbing to a thousand metres for the whole plateau at once.
- +60 minLanding
Onto a trailer if the pilot is good and the field allows, otherwise into a vineyard, and the crew walks the basket out. Then the toast, the certificate, and back at your hotel by 08:30.
Who can fly, and what to wear
Restrictions
- Age. Usually six and above, occasionally seven. Under-sixes are not carried.
- Height. A minimum around 120 cm, so a child can see over the basket edge and stand for landing.
- Weight. Most operators cap an individual passenger at 120–130 kg, and may ask for a second seat above that.
- Pregnancy. Not carried, because of the landing impact.
- Mobility and recent surgery. You must climb into and out of the basket unaided and stand braced for touchdown. With recent surgery, get medical clearance first.
What to wear
Sunrise in the valley runs 10–20 °C below the afternoon, and you are standing still in it. Layers, a windproof outer, closed shoes with grip for the landing field, and a hat. Nothing loose on your head — the burner is directly above you. From November to March add gloves.
Cameras and phones are welcome and a wrist strap is a good idea; drones are prohibited in the balloon airspace and confiscated.
Questions people ask at 4am
Where does today's decision on this page come from?
From the official per-sector decision issued for Kapadokya airspace each morning, which is the only decision that authorises or grounds a commercial flight. When a decision exists for the day, this page shows it and marks it as official. Where no decision has been made yet, the page shows an estimated cancellation risk from the forecast instead, and says so.
How far ahead can I trust the risk percentage?
Two or three days is genuinely useful. Beyond about five days a Cappadocian morning forecast moves too much to plan around, and past ten days the number tells you about the season rather than the day. For anything further out, use the month-by-month record on this page.
When will I know whether my flight is going?
A first indication comes around 21:00 the night before, and the decision that counts is made between 03:00 and 05:00 on the morning. That is why a pickup is sometimes cancelled after you have already been collected — the sector can close in the hour before launch.
How many mornings should I keep free?
In August, one is usually enough. In September and October, two. From November to April, three or four: half of those mornings do not fly. Book the flight for your first morning and keep the later ones as spares, because a spare after the flight is useless.
Do I get my money back if the flight is cancelled?
With us, yes. A weather cancellation is moved to the next morning you are in Cappadocia at no charge, and refunded to your card if there is no next morning. Elsewhere, ask the question in writing before paying: some sellers issue credit rather than a refund.
Can flights be cancelled in one sector but not another?
Yes, and it happens often. The decision is made per sector, so the north can be red while the south flies. If your operator holds a licence in more than one sector they may move the launch, which does not change your pickup time.
Is it safe?
Cappadocia flies about a quarter of a million passengers a year under civil aviation rules that are conservative to the point of frustration — which is exactly why so many mornings are cancelled. Pilots hold a commercial balloon licence with a minimum flight-hour requirement and terrain-specific training, and envelopes are inspected annually and retired on hours.
Is the balloon flight worth the price?
For most people, once. It is the single most expensive hour of a Turkey trip and the one they describe first afterwards. If the budget is tight, fly standard rather than deluxe: the view from a standard basket with up to 32 people is the same view.
